São Paulo’s nightlife is TOP, as Brazilians would say, which means it’s really good. And I love a good speakeasy: secret entrance doors, underground cocktail bars, all of it. Ooh la la.
But SP also does rooftops really well, plus listening bars and clubs where the night keeps going until the sun comes up. So here are 6 secret speakeasies, 5 rooftop bars with city views, and 4 spots for when you want to dance. If you’re planning the rest of your trip, start with my São Paulo travel guide.

Hidden Speakeasies in São Paulo
1. Lágrima Bar (República)
- Best for: Vinyl lovers and a moody, intimate vibe
- Location: Open in Google Maps
Lágrima Bar is hidden behind a real, working bookstore downtown. You go through a secret bookcase door into a room that’s almost completely dark, and they only play music on vinyl. Go late at night for a cocktail when you want to get away from the noise of Centro.

2. Frigobar Speakeasy (Perdizes)
- Best for: Custom cocktails in a 1920s setting
- Location: Open in Google Maps
Frigobar is all about the Prohibition era. The best part: every table gets its own bartender, who makes your drinks right at your table based on what flavors you like.

3. Iscondido Bar (Pinheiros)
- Best for: A password-only door and weekend nightcaps
- Location: Open in Google Maps
There’s no name on the outside, just a number. You need a secret password to get in, which you get when you make a reservation, so reservations are a must. It’s only open on Fridays and Saturdays after 6pm.

4. Next Door (Jardim Europa)
- Best for: Fancy cocktails connected to a secret club
- Location: Open in Google Maps
Next Door is on Rua Amauri, one of the fanciest streets in the city, and you get in through a hidden elevator. Heads up: there’s a minimum spend.

5. SubAstor Bar do Cofre (Centro Histórico)
- Best for: Drinking inside a real historic bank vault
- Location: Open in Google Maps
Bar do Cofre (run by SubAstor) is in the basement of the historic Farol Santander building, inside the old bank vault. You’re surrounded by safe deposit boxes, heavy armored doors and red lighting.

6. Oculto (Pinheiros)
- Best for: Low-lit date nights and hidden corners
- Location: Open in Google Maps
Oculto is inside a converted house, with dark rooms, a very sexy design, and little tucked-away places to sit.

Rooftop Bars in São Paulo
Centro has some of the best rooftops in the city. The old buildings downtown give you skyline views you don’t get anywhere else in SP.
7. Matiz (República)

- Location: Open in Google Maps
- Hours: Opens at 7pm Tuesday to Saturday, 4pm to 10pm on Sunday, closed Monday
Matiz is a rooftop listening bar, and people say it has the best sound system in the city. It’s inspired by Japanese listening bars, with DJs, craft cocktails and a terrace looking out over the downtown skyline. It gets packed, so get there right when it opens or plan on standing.

8. Ephigenia (Santa Ifigênia)
- Best for: Dancing to electronic music with a 360 view
- Location: Open in Google Maps
- Getting there: About 2 minutes from São Bento metro station. The building sits on top of the viaduct, so follow the map pin to the entrance.

Ephigenia takes up the top two floors of a building in Centro, with a dance floor on one level and a lounge with an almost 360-degree terrace on the other. The parties play electronic music until around 6am. Check their Instagram for the party schedule before you go.
9. Terraço Itália (Centro)
- Best for: The classic São Paulo view, 41 floors up
- Location: Open in Google Maps
Terraço Itália is the original São Paulo rooftop. It sits on the 41st floor of the Edifício Itália, with a restaurant, a bar and live music. Dinner is pricey, so do what the locals do: skip the restaurant, grab a drink at the bar and stay for the view.
10. Esther Rooftop (República)
- Best for: A romantic dinner or long lunch with a view
- Location: Open in Google Maps
- Dress code: Smart casual

Esther Rooftop is on top of the Edifício Esther, one of the oldest modernist buildings downtown. It serves French bistro food with Brazilian touches, and the wooden deck looks right over Praça da República. It’s open for lunch and dinner.
11. A Balsa (Centro Histórico)
- Best for: A laid-back rooftop with cheap-ish drinks and parties

- Hours: Wednesday to Sunday, from the evening on weekdays and the afternoon on weekends (check their Instagram, @a_balsa)
A Balsa has vintage decor, a rooftop terrace over Centro, cocktails, craft beer and snacks. It’s more relaxed than the fancy rooftops, and it hosts live music and parties. Some events sell tickets in advance.
