Hi, I’m JP — the writer behind Location Varies.
Travel wasn’t part of my childhood — it became something I chose, intentionally. The first time I left the United States was at 18, to England for university.
Since then, my path has been winding and non-linear. I’ve studied and worked in China, Thailand, Malaysia, Kenya, and Taiwan — following opportunities wherever they led.
At 19, I took my first solo trip to South Korea. More than a decade later, I’m still following that thread.
I write the way I would recap a trip to my sisters — conversational, honest, and full of stories.
But I also care about the details.
Every post blends narrative and utility:
- Personal reflections
- Cultural observations
- Practical travel tips
- Detailed guides you can actually use

Location Varies is a space where I keep practical travel guides, cultural observations,
and stories on what it means to move through the world thoughtfully.
Where I’m based now
Right now, I’m based nowhere. I usually pick a destination for anywhere from 1 week – 8 weeks. As for the long-term? I could see myself moving back to Washington, DC. or Los Angeles. Taipei. Porto. Nairobi. Or somewhere else entirely. For now, I’m traveling.
