What to Do in Karen, Nairobi

Nairobi traffic is a menace. If I’m leaving the sanctity of my Kilimani neighborhood and committing to a 30–45 minute drive, I need to maximize my time. Karen has a lot to do – nature, food, culture, and a lot luxury if that’s your vibe.

Here’s exactly what to do in Karen, Nairobi.

🌿 Outdoor & Nature Activities in Karen

Hiking in Langata (Ngong Forest / Oloolua side)
If you need fresh air and a mental reset, hiking around Langata/Karen is a solid move. The trails are beginner-friendly, green, and don’t require a whole safari-level commitment. Go early to avoid crowds and heat. The Oloolua nature trail.

Outdoor Farmers Market

Only open on Saturdays, this market sells fruits veggies locally made goods, and has a lot of kids + kids activities.

🦒 Wildlife Experiences

Giraffe Manor

Yes, the place you’ve seen all over Instagram where giraffes stick their heads through the window while you eat breakfast.
It costs around $1,500+ to stay there – and that’s the per person rate, not the room rate.

Giraffe Centre

If you want the giraffe experience without all that hooplah, go to the Giraffe Centre. You can feed the giraffes, learn about conservation, and still get cute photos, for a fraction of the price. Way more realistic and still iconic.

🎨 Culture & Shopping in Karen

Kazuri Beads
This is one of my favorite stops. Kazuri Beads has an on-site workshop where you can:

  • Tour the bead-making process
  • See local artisans at work
  • Make jewelry yourself

Everything is handmade, colorful, and meaningful. Great for gifts or souvenirs that don’t feel cheap or touristy.

🍽️ Where to Eat in Karen

Cultiva (Ecuadorian / Global Fusion)
High-end, stylish, and very Karen-coded. I tried the Korean taco and crab dumplings—both solid. It’s one of those places where the menu travels the world, and it mostly works. Good for brunch, dates, or when you want something a little elevated.

Talisman
This place is always recommended. Beautiful garden setting, African-inspired decor, and an eclectic menu for a western palate.
It’s nice, just not exciting for me. Still worth visiting once if you haven’t.

Asmara Restaurant (Eritrean)
Flavor, culture, and comfort. If you love injera, stews, and communal eating, this place hits. Underrated and worth the stop.

Matteo’s Italian
This place doubles as a restaurant and an event space. It’s huge, hosts pop-ups, and turns into a nightlife spot depending on the day. If you want dinner that might casually turn into a night out, this is your place.

Hemingway Nairobi (Luxury Hotel Dining)
If you’re in the mood for polished, upscale energy, Hemingway delivers. Think luxury hotel vibes, refined service, and a calm escape from the city chaos. Perfect for brunch, business meetings, or when you want to feel fancy without trying too hard.

Tin Roof Café (Langata)
Laid-back, casual, and perfect for coffee with a view. Great stop if you’re already in the Langata area and want something chill without the Karen price tag.

🏨 Where to Stay

Hemingway Nairobi
One of the most upscale hotels in the area. Spacious suites, quiet surroundings, and very “escape the city without leaving Nairobi” energy.

Final Thoughts

Karen is an upscale almost suburb of Nairobi. It’s a bit out of the city, so when I go over there I like to spend my time wisely. It’s family friendly and a top choice for tourists who don’t need or want to be too involved in Nairobi’s nightlife.
