Kilimani is where I chose to stay for five weeks in Nairobi, and I have thoughts. It’s busy, congested, and very much in motion—but if you actually slow down and explore on foot, Kilimani is nice. It’s central, practical, and full of low-key gems once you stop expecting it to be “cute.”
If you’re staying in Kilimani or spending a lot of time here, these are my real recommendations.
🎨 Art & Culture in Kilimani
Kuona Artists Collective (Centre for the Visual Arts)
This places reminds you Nairobi is huge, and has a serious creative pulse. Kuona showcases contemporary Kenyan artists and regularly hosts exhibitions and events. If you’re interested in local culture, community spaces, it’s a must. Read my separate blog about all the artists I saw there.
🍽️ Where to Eat & Drink in Kilimani
Kesh Kesh Café & Kesh Kesh Coffee Roasters
A neighborhood favorite with a cozy feel. Great for coffee, light bites, and a slower pace when Kilimani starts to feel overwhelming. It’s the kind of place you end up returning to without planning to.

Mezze on the Deck
On the Sheraton Hurlingham rooftop. I went early, ordered a cappuccino, and had the entire place to myself

Unseen Nairobi – Rooftop Cinema Restaurant
Unseen is also a cinema, showcasing mostly political movies about issues that are largely “unseen” – hence the name. It’s a nice rooftop, has a good menu, lots of African stews and some Asian fusion with kimchi grilled cheese and Malaysian laksa offered. I tried their famous Korean fried chicken sandwich and the laksa. Both were great.
Location Rooftop – More of a club with tables
My understanding this is more a night time club but I went for a cappuccino first thing in the morning and enjoyed an empty restauatnt with gorgeous view while I read the morning away.

Melat Coffee – Ethiopian Traditional Coffee
If you care about your coffee, this spot matters. Melat does Ethiopian coffee properly, and it’s a great place to sit, reset, and escape the chaos outside for a bit.
Sierra Brasserie – Steak House but Casual
Specializes in steak and burgers I’d say. The food is good, the atmosphere is relaxed, and it works for pretty much anything—breakfast, lunch, or a casual dinner when you don’t feel like making decisions. Also a solid option if you’re working remotely or meeting friends and don’t want the place itself to be the main event.

老灶火锅 (Laozao Hotpot) – Good Chinese Food
Yes, proper hotpot in Nairobi—and it hits. If you’re craving something different or missing Asian comfort food, this place is worth seeking out. Ideal for group dinners and cold evenings.
🛍️ Shopping & Everyday Essentials
Yaya Centre
Not glamorous, but incredibly useful. Yaya Centre is where you go for groceries, errands, random household items, and anything you don’t feel like hunting down across the city. If you’re staying in Kilimani, you’ll end up here whether you plan to or not.
🌳 Nature Breaks in the City
Nairobi Arboretum
When Kilimani gets loud and congested, the Arboretum is the reset button. It’s perfect for walks, picnics, or just getting some green space without leaving the city. One of the easiest ways to balance out the neighborhood’s intensity.
Final Thoughts on Kilimani
Kilimani isn’t polished or picturesque, but it’s central, and full of everyday comforts. It’s a neighborhood that grows on you the longer you stay.
