One Day in Bratislava, Slovakia — Day Trip from Budapest

Thinking of doing a day trip from Budapest to Bratislava? You should. Here’s what I did in 12 hours.

I decided to take a day trip from Budapest to Bratislava the night before. No itinerary, just a €50 FlixBus ticket, and my purse. The bus ride is about 2.5 hours each way from Budapest. There are two bus stations in Budapest, ensure you arrive at the correct one. I opted for the 9 AM bus, and arrived to Bratislava by 11:30 AM. You can walk from the Bratislava bus station into town. It required 0 planning or stress.

Fun Facts About Bratislava and Slovakia

  • Slovakia is home to more castles per square mile than any other country in Europe, over 300 castles and ruins scattered around.
  • Bratislava’s Old Town is tiny, you could walk from one end to the other in under 30 minutes.
  • Bratislava was the capital of Hungary for 200~ years during the Ottoman occupation of Budapest .
  • Slovak and Czech languages are so similar that many locals understand both.
  • Slovakia borders two countries, Austria and Hungary. It’s a 1 hour drive from Vienna, Austria, and 2.5 hour drive from Budapest, Hungary.

Is Bratislava Worth Visiting for a Day?

Yes. Bratislava is compact, walkable, and charming without trying too hard. It doesn’t overwhelm you with “must-see” pressure, one day is plenty.

Where I Ate and Drank

Urban House

Upon arrival, I sat at Urban House just to get my plan together for the day. I chose it because it looked cute. Then I realized, it’s called Urban House because the theme of the restaurant is Black American. They served rosé, fried chicken, macaroni and only played American hip hop. It was a funny first stop, and also a laugh, because why is Black culture exported to every corner of the world?

Mondieu
Strong espresso, comfortable seating, and excellent people-watching. Exactly what I needed mid-day to reset.

Bratislava Flagship Restaurant
Housed in what feels like an old theater turned beer hall cathedral. I ordered beer and people watched, but this is the place to try Slovak food—potato dumplings, and meat.

Slovak Pub
Wood-paneled, loud, unapologetically local. Tourists go here. Locals also go here. The beer is cheap, cold, and served without ceremony. I approve.

What I Did in Bratislava for 12 hours

Bratislava Old Town

I unintentionally walked around Bratislava’s Old Town 3 times because I just kept thinking there was more to it. It’s tiny, and quaint.

UFO Observation Deck

After, that, I walked the Most SNP (Most Slovenského národného povstania) Bridge to the UFO Observation Deck. It looks like a spaceship, it was finished in 1972. and it gives you great views of the Danube and the city.

Bratislava Castle

From there, I walked uphill to Bratislava Castle, which was first built in 907…which is insane. The climb is steep but the views are worth it. What was most exciting though…while I was walking along the grounds I discovered a small rave playing electronic dance music – which warmed my heart infinitely.

Getting Back to Budapest & Final Thoughts

At 9 PM, I hopped on the bus back to Budapest and was in bed asleep at midnight. The ride is long for a day trip — 2.5 hours each way — but was totally manageable. The views of the city, the tiny old town, the macaroni & cheese “urban” restaurant, and obviously the rave made for such a fun day trip for lil ol’ me.

If you’re debating Vienna versus Bratislava, Vienna may win on geography alone. But if you want something less touristy with castle raves, and a slower pace, go with Bratislava.
